Does EVERYONE else love The Beatles?
OK, I need to find out...
I have been getting the feeling during the past few years that I am alone in thinking The Beatles are, well, enormously over-rated.
I'm obviously also becoming a grumpy old bloke, because I found myself almost seething with indignation as I watched former Radio 1 DJ and one-man pop music quote factory Paul Gambaccini practically crawl up the collective back end of the Fab Four on TV on Sunday evening.
Don't get me wrong - Gambaccini is a relevant music historian, and The Beatles were, and are, influential etc etc. But, oh boy, to listen to him go on, you'd think that every note hummed in public since 1963 was directly and indisputably influenced by The Beatles, and that anyone creating music who believes that to be NOT the case is deluded.
Well, I reckon they had a couple of decent songs, but were largely up their own behinds. Lennon's solo output was nearly as dire as McCartney's. I just think they were, and are, given more credit than they deserved.
Am I alone here? I remember Kingsley Cox being a big fan, to the point where he would hover around the stereo at some parties in an effort to turn off the music de jour and put on his Beatles tapes...
Anyway, needed to get that one off my chest....

Oooh, controversial! You'll have the Beatles police after you for this one!
If we're nailing colours to the mast and all that, I'm with you Ray. Never got them, don't own a single recording by them and not inclined to dig into the back catalogue anytime soon.
That's me struck off Macca's Xmas card list then!
